STAFF WIRE

Welcome to the Ujima Staff WIRE! The Staff WIRE is an extension of our monthly #CO-DIRECT meeting, which happens on the first Wednesday of each month, meant to update and provide a consistent window of opportunity for Ujima members to see and participate in key activities led by staff within the Ujima Ecosystem. The Ujima Staff WIRE is a monthly publication.

Governing Ujima

Earlier this year, we invited Ujima Members to join us in developing a structure for a member run Board at the Ujima Project. In September, the group began its “Peer Governance Learning Session” in an effort to deepen knowledge about how other groups have created and organized boards. The Peer Governance Learning Sessions are an opportunity for the Board Launch Design Team to gain insight into what has worked, and hasn’t worked, from peers in the Ujima ecosystem.

You can watch the full archived video of our second session on Peer Governance Learning Session with Ruby Reyes and Imari Paris Jeffries on our Youtube page now. You can find the first video online in our Governing Ujima Youtube Playlist.

We want you to learn with us! We encourage you to take notes and invite you to send follow up questions or feedback to our Governing Ujima Study Doc.

No Workshop or Member Team Meeting

This week, we will not have a workshop or member team meeting. #UjimaWednesdays will resume next week on December 2nd, 2020.

Staff Wire Spotlight: Johnny Charles

This month’s Staff Wire will focus on Johnny Charles, our Managing Director for the Ujima Fund. Johnny is excited about launching our inaugural Investor Report, which is aimed at sharing an update of the Ujma Fund, capturing investments from the past year and continuing to tell our story.

He has also been enjoying The Purpose of Power by Alicia Garza. “[I’m] continuing to build my own understanding of how to organize and build collective power through movement [and] coalitions. Of the many facets of her organizing experience, Ms. Garza walks us through her community-centered policy changes leading up to her co-founding of the Black Lives Matter movement, which have offered me much to build-on as a new leader in the solidarity economy. This novel manifests possible community change not only possible in West Oakland but anywhere you consider calling home.”

This past weekend, Johnny has been exploring what happens when you take the Ujima model of collective work to your family. On November 20th, the Charles Family hosted a workshop titled Finance and Economic Development (FED). This is set to be a series where they investigate how to use collective power to transfer wealth, and create a community fund all the while learning both their family's economic history and uncovering their homeland's history (Haiti).
